harry potter

Harry Potter is the central character of the Harry Potter books and their subsequent movie and game adaptations. Only child of the powerful wizards James and Lily Potter, he was orphaned shortly after his birth when the very evil wizard Voldemort killed both of Harry's parents. For some unknown reason Voldemort was unable to inflict upon the infant Harry the fate which befell his parents. The evil wizard's attempt on Harry's life not only failed, but also somehow reflected onto Voldemort, leaving him powerless and nearly dead. It is likely that had the wizard been less thoroughly embroiled in the Dark Arts, he would not have survived at all. After that night, most of the wizarding world believed Voldemort dead. No victim of Voldemort had ever escaped with their lives, and so Harry Potter became famous throughout the magical community as The Boy Who Lived.

With both his parents dead, the orphaned Harry was sent to live with his utterly unmagical relatives the Dursleys. Brought up living in a cupboard under the stairs, Harry reached his eleventh birthday knowing nothing of his parent's magical background. The Dursleys never spoke of Mrs Dursley's sister Lily, or her abnormal abilities. At the age of eleven, however, Harry was to be sent to boarding school. Rather than the unpleasant school Mr Dursley had planned for him, Harry received a place at the world's premier school of wizardry, Hogwarts. The seven book Harry Potter series chronicles Harry's experiences at the school of magic, each book telling of one year in the life of this most magical boy.

Students mentioned in J.K. Rowling's character notes

During a 2001 TV special called Harry Potter and Me, J.K. Rowling showed the camera an early notebook page listing some of the students in Harry's year. Each student's name was given, along with her/his sex, house, and "blood status". These notes are not considered canon, as many of the characters have undergone significant changes from the notes to the books. For instance, Michael Corner and Anthony Goldstein are listed as Hufflepuffs in the notebook, but when they are introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, both of them are Ravenclaws; indeed, Anthony Goldstein is one of the Ravenclaw prefects.

Listed below, there are several students from Harry's year who are mentioned in the notebook, but were not introduced in the actual books.

* Stephen Cornfoot (Ravenclaw)
* Tracey Davis (Slytherin)
* Kevin Entwhistle (Ravenclaw)
* Wayne Hopkins (Hufflepuff)
* Megan Jones (Hufflepuff)
* Su Li (Ravenclaw, possibly evolves to be Cho Chang)
* Isabel MacDougal (Ravenclaw, possibly an earlier version of Morag MacDougal)
* Malone (Unknown)
* River (Unknown, who becomes the pseudonym of Lee Jordan of Book 7)
* Rapier (Unknown, who becomes the pseudonym of Fred Weasley of Book 7)
* Runcorn (Unknown - could be related to Albert Runcorn, a wizard impersonated by Harry using Polyjuice Potion who has this surname)
* Spinks (Unknown, possibly an earlier name for Draco Malfoy)

* Severus Snape (Headmaster during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)
* Minerva McGonagall (acting Hogwarts headmistress for a short period in Spring and Summer 1993 (the latter part of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), and from Summer 1997 (the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince); Gryffindor)

* Year 5: Dolores Jane Umbridge – Power craver, eventually becomes headmistress, driven out and traumatised by Centaurs for calling them "filthy half-breeds"; She was led into the forest by Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, and led to the centaurs. Because of her ignorance, and hatred for half-humans, the centaurs maul her, and she suffers permanent damage. Left Hogwarts, chased by Peeves the Poltergeist.
